  • Keep stirring the mixture, so it does not stick.
  • The saffron will give your halwa a beautiful hue. Add the ghee in intervals to stop it from burning from the bottom. 
  • Once done, let it sit for a while. The halwa will thicken as it cools.

  • Blend at least 2-3 times so that you have even fine particles.
  • Sieve it to make sure that the powder is fine and not coarse.
  • Take 2 cups of sugar and 6 tbsp of water and melt it into a syrup in the pan (use a non-stick pan and gently stir to allow the sugar to dissolve and caramelise).
  • Lower the flame and add the flour mixture to the syrup.
  • Slowly stir so there are no lumps.

  • When the mixture starts to pull away, turn off the stove and let it cool.

  • ¼ tbsp saffron strands
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • ¼ cup of sugarcane jaggery
  • ¼ tsp of cardamom powder (elaichi)
  • 1 tbsp chopped almonds
  • 1 tbsp chopped cashew nuts (kaju)
  • 1 tbsp chopped pistachios
  • 1 tbsp of chopped raisins


  • Wash and soak the rice in water overnight to make this rendition amongst the Navratri sweets for 9 days.
  • Boil water in a deep pan. Then, add the rice and cook it for 30–35 minutes.
  • Pour 1 tbsp of milk and cook well for a minute.

The batter, often made with a blend of semolina, flour, and mashed ripe bananas or khoya (reduced milk), is deep-fried until golden. Then you soak it in the syrup. Each bite is a journey through centuries of tradition offering a glimpse into the rich heritage and flavours.

  • Khapli atta(1 cup)
  • Fennel seeds (1 teaspoon)
  • Sugarcane Jaggery(2 cups)
  • Grated khoya (mawa or dried milk solids) (3 tablespoons)
  • Curd/yoghurt (3 tablespoons)
  • Water (½ cup)


For Syrup
  • Mix sugar and water in a pot.
  • Boil the syrup till it turns sticky.
  • Heat 3 cups of water in a big pot and keep the syrup pot over it to keep it warm. It prevents the syrup from crystallising. 
For Malpua
    • In a mixing bowl, place 1 cup of khapli atta, 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds (saunf), and 3 to 4 crushed green cardamom pods (discard the peels) or ⅓ teaspoon of powder. Now, thoroughly blend the dry ingredients.
    • Add 3 tablespoons of grated khoya (mawa or dried milk solids) and 3 tablespoons of curd/yoghurt. It is preferable to use fresh yoghurt. Alternatively, you can use whole milk powder or dairy whitener instead of khoya.
    • Pour in ½ cup of water.
    • Start stirring with a whisk.
    • Stir until you have a smooth batter without lumps. 
    • Add 2-3 tbsps of ghee on a flat pan and let it heat up for a minute.
    • Take a ladle to scoop the batter.
    • Once the ghee is hot, scoop half a ladle of the mixture and gently release it into the hot ghee.
    • Do not spread the batter. It will do so on its own if the consistency is correct, Spreading it with the ladle might scramble it ruining the consistency.
    • When the edges turn golden, flip and fry.
    • When it turns golden brown remove it from oil and dip it into the syrup.

  • 2 cups peanut/groundnut
  • 1½ cup jaggery / gud / Bella
  • 2 tbsp water


  • Firstly, in a thick-bottomed pan, dry roast 2 cups of peanuts on low flame. Alternatively, you can use a microwave to roast the peanuts until they are well-roasted.
  • Keep stirring continuously to evenly roast the peanuts.
  • Once the peanuts start to shed their skin, turn off the flame and let them cool off.
  • Peel off the skin of roasted peanuts. 
  • In a large kadai, put 1½ cups of jaggery.
  • Add 2 tbsp of water and stir until the jaggery melts, keeping the flame low.
  • Stir thoroughly until the jaggery completely melts.
  • Boil the jaggery syrup on a low flame for 5 minutes until the syrup turns glossy and thickens.
  • Check the consistency by dropping a bit of syrup into a bowl of water; it should form a hard ball and produce a snap sound when cut. If not, boil for another minute and recheck.
  • Turn off the flame and add the roasted peanuts.
  • Stir well, ensuring the jaggery syrup coats the peanuts evenly.
  • Immediately pour the mixture onto a tray lined with butter paper.
  • Spread and pat with the help of a small cup to smoothen the top.

Allow these Navratri sweets to cool for a minute, and while they’re still warm, cut them into pieces. Serve the peanut chikki once it has cooled completely. 

Day 7: Jaggery for Maa Kaalratri: Jaggery/ Narkel Naadu

  • Begin by grating the coconut.
  • Heat a wok and melt the sugarcane jaggery.
  • Mix the grated coconut with the jaggery.
  • Ensure continuous stirring and mixing to prevent burning.
  • Turn off the heat as the mixture begins to release from the wok.
  • Dampen your palm with water and shape small portions of the mixture into round laddu shapes. Serve it for Navratri Naivedyam for 9 days.

Day 8:Coconut for Goddess Mahagauri: Paruppu Payasam

  • ½ cup moong dal (pasi paruppu), rinsed
  • 1 cup water for cooking moong dal
  • 1.5 cups water for pressure cooking
  • ½ cup thin coconut milk or water
  • ¾ cup jaggery powder
  • 1 cup thick coconut milk
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or ghee)
  • 12 to 15 cashews
  • 1 tablespoon raisins
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom powder


  • Rinse moong dal.
  • Pressure cook moong dal for 5 to 6 whistles on medium heat or 9 to 10 minutes. Alternatively, cook the lentils directly in the cooker with 1.5 cups of water for such options amongst the easy Navratri sweets recipes.
  • Once pressure settles, check if the lentils are well-cooked, but not too pasty. Remove from the pan and mash with a spoon.
  • Transfer cooked moong dal to another pan or kadai, and add ½ cup thin coconut milk or water. Stir well.
  • Add ¾ cup jaggery powder (adjust sweetness to taste) and heat the mixture on low flame.
  • Stir continuously until jaggery dissolves, then add 1 cup thick coconut milk. Mix gently and heat for a minute without boiling.
  • In a small pan, heat coconut oil (or ghee). Then fry cashews until golden. 
  • Add raisins and cardamom powder. Fry until the raisins swell.
  • Pour the tadka (tempered mixture) into the payasam and mix well.

Serve hot or warm. Refrigerate any leftovers once it cools to room temperature for a thicker consistency.

Day 9: Sesame Seed Candies/ Til ka Naadu for Maa Siddhidatri

On this final day of our Navratri journey, dedicated to Maa Siddhidatri, we savor Til ka Naadu, a delightful treat made from sesame seeds. So, prepare these delicious treats, and enjoy them as a delicious cap to our nine days of Navratri sweets.!


  • 200 grams white sesame seeds (til)
  • 300 grams jaggery (gur)
  • A small amount of ghee


  • Thoroughly clean and roast the sesame seeds until they attain a light golden colour. Set them aside.
  • In a pan, combine ¼ cup of water and jaggery. Keep stirring over low heat to get a sticky consistency.
  • Remove from heat. Let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Pour the jaggery over the roasted sesame seeds. Mix thoroughly.
  • Grease your palms with a little ghee. 
  • Take a small portion of the mixture, and shape it into a ball. Your Til Ke Laddu or Til er Naru Navratri sweets for 9 days are now ready.
