A traditional Indian meal comprises of so many different lentils, pulses and legumes. The Chana Dal ,also known as the split chickpea is such a versatile ingredient.

It can be cooked along with greens to make a hearty lunch side dish with rice .It is also the favoured lentil to make crisp dal fritters known as paruppu vadai in the South Indian State of TamilNadu.

Split chickpea is also used to make protein rich savoury pancakes by adding ground ginger, chillies, curry leaves and cumin.

A chana dal payasam is a Manglorean delicacy.
